Situated in the centre of the village, next to the church and village green, Chitterne Village Hall was opened in February 1999. It stands on the site of the old village school, built in 1840 and used as a hall from 1970 until it's demolition in 1998.
The new hall, built with the help of grants from the National Lottery Millennium Fund and the Rural Development Commission, has been beautifully designed to fit into the village environment and to make the most convenient and adaptable use of the site. Some reminders of the old building have been incorporated into the new. Old beams and slates form part of the roof. Outside, at the front, is a parking area with steps and a ramp to the entrance. At the rear there are two enclosed areas for play or barbecues etc. accessed by double doors from the small hall and the reception area.

Inside the building the welcoming reception area curves around the centrally positioned kitchen. There are three toilets, including one for the disabled, and a rest area leading off. Double doors lead to two interconnecting halls, these can be used independently or together. The floors generally are the practical, easy care type but in the main hall, the floor, like the open roof space and dividing doors, is of natural wood. The colour scheme of daffodil yellow and pale green adds to an overall effect of simplicity and space. Hall furniture can be stowed out of sight in the large storage area next to the main hall. |
