Heating Oil Thefts, Police Message - 30 November 2011
For your information the Tisbury area has been hit with so far 13 incidents where heating oil has been stolen from garden tanks, though this number may rise when others check their tanks and find out they have been subject to a theft of heating oil. The 13 thefts reported are contained in a relatively small area, namely Tisbury, Swallowcliffe, Tisbury Row, Hindon and Chicksgrove, with nothing outside this area being reported so far, including in the EV and EW beat areas. Apart from one instance at the beginning of October, in Melbury Abbas, Dorset has not suffered anything similar.
The exact dates as to when the heating oil has been taken is not certain, as it depends on when the victim last measured the amount they had in their tank to notice that any had been taken. We have had reported occurrence dates that range from 4th November up to 27th November 2011, though most seem to have been sometime in the last week.
It is suspected that this is a well planned operation, as various amounts have been taken from the tanks ranging from 5,500 litres to 500 litres, this indicates that the oil is being taken by someone who is well planned as a large vehicle, like a fuel tanker, possibly without any livery on the side, or large vehicle carrying tanks on the back, whatever it is it would need pumping equipment.
Many of the reports are now coming to light through highlighting the problem to the community, it is suspected that there may be more thefts that have not yet been reported due to not regularly checking the levels of the tanks. The majority of these thefts have occurred over the past week and it is highly suspected that the offenders are still in the area.
The Police are also reliant upon members of the public reporting sightings of vehicles acting suspiciously or whilst committing these offences.

New Non-Emergency Phone Number for Wiltshire Police - 21 September 2011
Wiltshire Police has changed its non emergency number to 101.
The 101 number is being introduced nationally in phases and on 19 September it was launched across forces in the South West, including Wiltshire.
Although 999 is a well recognised number to report emergencies, the 2010 British Crime Survey found that only half of the public knew which number to call if they wanted to speak to their local police about policing, non-urgent crime and anti-social behaviour.
Wiltshire Police's Head of Contact Management, Chief Inspector Charlie Armstrong, said: "Changing our non emergency contact number to 101 makes it much easier for people to contact us. It is easy to remember and will be used by all forces across the country by the beginning of 2012.
"We are constantly looking for ways to build on and improve our service to the public and this change is a positive one that we are confident will be welcomed by our communities."
Wiltshire Police Authority Chairman, Christopher Hoare, said: "The introduction of 101 provides the public of Wiltshire and Swindon with an easier number to remember for contacting Wiltshire Police.
"Calls to 101 are automatically directed to the nearest police force, so I can assure the public that calls from Wiltshire will be answered by Wiltshire Police staff."
Calls to 101 cost 15p per call, irrespective of how long that call may last. This applies to landlines and mobile phones.
People with hearing or speech impairments are able to use the non emergency textphone number 18001 101.
The 101 number replaces the existing non emergency number (0845 408 7000) for Wiltshire Police. The 101 number should be used for all non emergencies such as: reporting a crime, contacting local officers, getting crime prevention advice, making an appointment with a police officer or making us aware of policing issues in your area.
It does not replace 999, which should be used in an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.
To find out more about 101, visit the Wiltshire Police website www.wiltshire.police.uk or look out for posters and flyers that have been distributed countywide.
Overweight Vehicles in Chitterne - message to all villagers from Douglas Stobie
4 September 2011
Our Community Policewoman has been receiving a number of messages from villagers about overweight vehicles coming through the village. Using Chitterne as a guide, she wants to set up a programme to deal with the problem and has asked me to co-ordinate a response from the village. Consequently, would you please notify me when you see an overweight vehicle. What is needed is a sighting by 2 people and reporting vehicle registration, any other vehicle information like type of vehicle or name of the company, date and time and direction. Individuals may wish to set up teams of 2 people to do checks at a specific time.
There is no way of being certain if a vehicle is overweight. But if you think it is overweight, report it. If you are wrong the Police will be able to establish this and no action will be taken.
I will compile a return for the village to see the outcome, but I need reports.

Help wanted with local history research
Are you interested in local history? Would you like to help with an exciting new project? The Victoria County History of Wiltshire has just begun researching its 19th volume, covering parishes in the Wylye Valley that are in the old Hundreds of Heytesbury and South Damerham. In 2007 the book ‘Codford Wool and War in Wiltshire’ was published, a project which involved both the VCH and volunteers. Volume 19 of the Wiltshire VCH also hopes to involve voluntary researchers. If you live in one of the Wylye parishes, or elsewhere and would still like to be involved please contact Helen Taylor on 01249 705500 (daytime) or email pottlepress@btinternet.com
SHREWTON OIL SHEIKS - UPDATE - April 2009
Many of you will know that I started a scheme to buy domestic heating oil in bulk for the area towards the end of last year. I christened the group ‘Shrewton Oil Sheiks’, and the group includes Chitterne, Orcheston and Tilshead. We are doing quite well ! At the beginning of February we put in an order for 17,000ltrs and this gave a typical saving on a fill of 600ltrs of £37. Only 20 people of the 52 on my database needed oil on this occasion and as people synchronise with the rhythm of ordering every 3 months this will improve. Nevertheless I was able to place a sizeable order giving me some good bargaining power. The more people we can get in on this group the greater will be the savings so if you would like to join then do please contact me on ml.badham@btinternet.com or, if you do not have email, my mobile; 07920 768853.
This is how the scheme works:
I email everyone and find out what oil everyone needs. I then call all the suppliers to our area and find out who will give us the best deal. I then place the order on behalf of those people who have said they need oil. If the customer does not have an account with the chosen supplier then I put the customer in contact with the supplier to set up an account. Everyone is kept informed at each stage. The rhythm; at the moment I carry out this exercise every 3 months; as at the beginning of February, May, August, November.
